报告摘要:
The Skyrme model is a geometric model of nuclear physics. Atomic nuclei are modelled using maps from R^3 to S^3 that minimise a natural energy. A fundamental problem in the Skyrme model (and more broadly in nuclear physics) is to understand the “spin-orbit force”, which encourages the spins of orbiting nucleons to align with their angular momentum. In this talk I will present a solution to this problem, obtained with Chris Halcrow, which exploits known symmetry properties of energy-minimising maps. No prior knowledge of nuclear physics, or the Skyrme model, will be assumed!
